Breast Reduction Cost
Breast Reduction is the common name for the procedure and the actual medical term is mammoplasty.
The procedure involves reducing the size and reshapes the breast by taking excessive tissue and skin. The procedure can also reduce the size of the dark surrounding the nipple.
Contrary to the normal belief the procedure is applicable both to men and women.
The process in male reduces the breast tissue in men and is a surgical procedure, usually performed in adult men. There are 2 types of procedures deployed for male breast reduction, cosmetic or therapeutically depending upon the request and the nature of the surgery. A plastic surgeon involved and a specialist such as an oncologist may take part as well.
The procedure is started with either using the general anesthesia for major surgery where the patient stays unconscious all throughout the course of surgery or by using local anesthesia where the area of surgery is numbed out and the patient stays awake throughout the surgery. The patient doesn’t feel pain while the surgery is carried out. The procedure takes about 3-5 hrs depending upon the procedure employed.
For the removal of tissues and skin from the breast, the surgeon makes one or more cuts in the breast. Once the excess tissue and skin is removed, stitches are required to close the breast. Sometimes the nipple and areola have to be removed and repositioned.
The surgical procedure is identical in women and most of the women opt for this procedure for various reasons and all are due to the enlarge breast. This may lead to back pain, neck pain and or simply they want to have a smaller breast because it is not proportional to their height and weight. On other hand there are women who want a firmer breast and opt for this procedure.
There are no serious side effects apart from some rare cases especially in women there could be blood clotting in large veins and this in a very rare (almost uncommon) could lead to death as well.
The common side effects are loss of any feeling to the nipples or the breast but are temporary lasting few months. Other side effects are scar marks of the surgery, women unable to breast feed and depending on the nature of the surgery some still are able to breast feed. There is also bruising and swelling could last for few days. There is also breast pain for the initial few days and minor discomfort for a week or so, but taking pain medicine helps.
Most women have some breast pain for the first few days after surgery and then milder discomfort for a week or longer. Medicine can help relieve the pain. Swelling and bruising may last for several weeks. Wearing a surgical bra 24 hours a day can help reduce swelling and support the breasts while they heal.
It is recommended to avoid any vigorous exercise and activities for 3-4 weeks for the breast to heal fully. The results of the procedure are usually permanent.
The average cost of the procedure is roughly around £4,550 – £5,600 and may vary from place to place and the surgeon carrying out the surgery.
